Wordpress founder Matt Mullenweg announced today that Automattic, the company behind wordpress.com has acquired Gravatar. Gravatar stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar” provides 80×80 pixel avatars that follows you from blog to blog and shows up beside your name wherever you comment.
Matt says that Gravatar servers have been transferred to Automattic and the service is now running 3x faster. Gravatar premium features are now free and users who paid for premium service in the last 60 days will get the refunds. Now all the wordpress.com users will get the Gravatars as default avatars and gravatars tags will be included in all the templates.
