Live Documents to challenge Microsoft Office

live documentsSabeer Bhatia, the co-founder of Hotmail is challenging Microsoft Office with Live Documents. Yesterday he released Live Documents, a free online version of the office suite with programs similar to Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

The Indian-born Stanford graduate said that Live Documents would pose a “significant” challenge to Microsoft’s propriety software business, which eventually would be made redundant by the evolving internet applications industry.

Apparently Microsoft’s purchase of Hotmail for $400 million has helped Bhatia to fund this project.

Live Documents is built on Flash and Flex and allow you to veiw and edit documents right from your browser. An optional desktop client will enable users to sync between online and offline versions of documents. The online and offline versions of the documents are always synchronized with out requiring any action from the user like import/export.

The service is currently in beta and access is by invitation only. You can request an invite from here.
