Anonymous P2P file sharing with MUTE

I love to use P2P for sharing files and downloading from torrents, but you never know when you will be sued by RIAA.

Mute is a simple file sharing tool for protecting your privacy while sharing. Usually File sharing clients make direct connections between peers, MUTE avoids direct connections with your sharing partners in the network for protecting privacy.

In simple terms, When you share a file with others via P2P, others can see your IP address. If the RIAA or similar spies sit between the network and monitor the network, they can identify your IP address and may demand your ISP to provide your details to sue you. This is the usual process. If you use MUTE it creates a virtual address for you and your network partners (other peers), so that all the peers in the network only know the virtual address but not the real IP address, this way it is hard to pin point you.

MUTE also uses encryption for the contents of all the neighbor connections in the network. This encryption is useful if someone manages to track all your internet traffic, with the encryption in place they will not be able to understand these messages. There are a lot of other technical details about the whole process but these beyond the scope of this article, if you are interested read here.

MUTE is a open source application available for Windows, Mac and Linux. There is no install, just download the app, extract the files and start using it. When you first open the app you need to select few options like 1024 bit encryption, folder for sharing files etc.

  1. That’s pretty nifty! I’m sure the RIAA will try to shut them down soon! Interesting service though!

  2. @Aseem
I don’t think it will happen, becoz it is just a tool which facilitates anonymous sharing. But we never know

  3. A better service that is also anonymous but web based is http://www.Dargens.com .

You join, look for friends with similar interests then you download using an indirect connection so that you ip address is not disclosed.

    Try it.

  4. Does anyone ever consider that the RIAA might actually WRITE these programs to catch illegal activity?
Where is the proof that this thing doesn’t call home to mama?

  5. A more established one is “Perfect Dark” mostly popular in Japan though

  6. Technically nothing is 100% anonymous, and RIAA Spy has a good point, we don’t know whether these programs are manufactured for the entrapment of illegal sharing, nor should you care. If you are doing something that is perceived as wrong then it is your responsibility to change the opinion of your peers in the betterment of those actions.

  7. It’s opensource.

You can check yourself for any behavior like that

  8. New Version of Dargens p2p launched.
