Mininova introduces copyright filtering system

Published on May 6, 2009   By Ram  1 Comment

Mininova, one of the popular torrent sites is testing a filtering system to recognize and remove torrents infringing copyrights in the aftermath of the Pirate Bay trial. Under the new system Mininova will use a third part content recognition system which will flag the .torrent files that point to potentially copyright infringing content, these files are eventually removed. The system will also prevent re-uploading of these torrents later on.

Currently the system is not fully functional, it is a trial at the moment. According to Torrentfreak this trial will last for 12 weeks with a few titles. Mininova is collaborating with Entertainment industry people for this system. “The system was selected by the copyright holders themselves who want an easier way to get torrent files removed than the current notice and takedown policy, and it is operated by an undisclosed third party.”

Mininova users are not happy with the latest move, comments for the Mininova blog post are all negative, some of the users expressed concerns of IP logging by the third party. It is not clear whether they will log IP addresses of the users who uploaded the copyright infringing content to Mininova, but it sounds scary.
