Tizen OS unveiled, Samsung devices to launch this year

Tizen OS was unveiled at MWC 2013, it is yet another mobile operating system based on Linux like Android and Ubuntu Touch. It’s development is going on from quite some time, several companies are already backing this open source operating system, most notable are Samsung and Intel. It joins the list of new mobile operating systems announced recently including Firefox OS and Ubuntu Touch.

Tizen is developed to serve as an alternative to Google’s Android OS. This was unveiled at MWC this year officially, and Samsung already built a reference device to pass it on to developers. Engadget previewed the reference device, by the looks of it the OS is coming on nicely, there is not much to see except few apps, home screen, settings etc. Looking at the reference design it is clear that it is aiming for the high end devices unlike the Firefox OS that also launched at MWC. The reference device built by Samsung looks like Galaxy SIII in a shell, and it has a 720p display.

France Telecom or Orange has already confirmed that they are launching a device this year with the Tizen 2.0 OS. The supposed devices are from Samsung and possibly Huawei, orange confirmed Samsung devices, but Huawei devices might be included in their line up.

Apart from Orange NTT Docomo of Japan has also confirmed that it want to carry the first handsets running Tizen OS. This means that Tizen OS will have a good start with the backing up of Samsung, Intel and carriers like Orange and NTT Docomo.
