Jolla has announced today it’s first smartphone based on the Sailfish OS. Sailfish is based on the MeeGo platform from Nokia. Former Nokia employees formed Jolla to continue the development of MeeGo platform, that is now called Sailfish and the first smartphone with this OS announced today. The smartphone is just called Jolla and will have compatibility with Android apps, but it is not clear that how many apps are supported and other details are not yet known.

Jolla is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, with 16GB of internal memory and 8MP camera. It comes with a 4.5-inch display. It will also support LTE in selected markets. The phone will support SD card for memory expansion. The phone itself looks like two pieces are joined together, the back cover can be replaced with a snap on cover which will change the look of the phone altogether.

It is priced at 399 Euros and will be available in select European markets in the 4th quarter of this year. Jolla might expand to the other markets later some time, but exact plans not clear at the moment. Jolla is currently allowing users to place pre-orders in kickstarter style, that is you can order for zero cost, or pay 40 for a limited edition phone with t-shirt or pay hundred and get all the goodies along with an extra snap on cover.

Jolla is entering already crowded smartphone market with cut throat competition. It will face tough competition from existing rivals like Android and iOS, and there is Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry. Not only these four OS but the upcoming Tizen OS, Firefox OS and Ubuntu. More details on this phone will emerge in few hours when Jolla announces the phone officially.
