Amazon quietly launches Indian marketplace at Amazon.in

Amazon has quietly launched an online Indian marketplace at Amazon.in. The site currently sells only books, movies and TV shows but more product categories including mobile phones, camera are expected soon. Amazon.in offers a marketplace where third-party sells can sell their stuff directly to consumers. Amazon India can’t sell their own products directly to consumers due to the the FDI regulations in India for multi-brand retailers.

Amazon India currently lists 7 million books, and around 12000 movies and TV shows and more products are expected soon. As a limited time offer Amazon is offering free delivery to all the items you buy at Amazon.in, otherwise free delivery is available for items that cost $499 or more.

Amazon India Launched

According to the site Amazon is handling the shipping along with individual sellers, it is not clear whether this is in a partnership with a courier service or they launched their own delivery service like Flipkart does.

Amazon launched a price comparison website at Junglee.com in February 2012, it allowed third-party sellers to advertise on Junglee to drive sales to their own portals.

Amazon.in will compete with other online retailers including the popular online retailer Flipkart.com in India.
