IRCTC has launched an official app for both Windows 8 and Windows Phone devices. The app is developed in association with Microsoft and is exclusive to Windows Platform at the moment. There are several unofficial apps in Windows Phone store and Android appstore that are mere wrappers around IRCTC’s mobile website.
This application is native to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 and offers all the features that you would expect from IRCTC. You can book tickets, check PNR status of the tickets, cancel tickets using mobile app et., you can also access booking history, preferences and more from the app. According to the app description the contacts and transactions are synced and can be accessed from multiple devices.
However the app will not allow you to book tickets at peak hour from morning until 12:00pm, that means you can’t book tatkal tickets using this app. The app works on Windows 8 PCs, tablets, smartphones running both Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.
IRCTC website is notorious for its loading times, users are frustrated but had no choice but to use the official site for booking train tickets. The introduction of mobile apps won’t do any good to the IRCTC except to say that we have an app for that. IRCTC should improve its website first and concentrate on adding capacity to its web servers to handle the load during peak times.
