Microsoft IPTV is now Microsoft Mediaroom

Microsoft announced today the availability of Microsoft Mediaroom, the IPTV platform. Microsoft IPTV is renamed as Mediaroom and added functionality.

Microsoft Mediaroom features several new capabilities including in-home personal music and photo sharing, dynamic multiple picture in picture capabilities and digital terrestrial television support.

Microsoft Mediaroom also provides Application Development Toolkit for developers and service providers to create compelling, revenue generating TV based applications to run on the platform.

“The Microsoft Mediaroom multimedia platform supports simultaneous recording of multiple high-definition and standard-definition TV channels.”

With this release it is clear that Microsoft wants to sit in each and every service. This looks to be an Apple TV killer with the digital media sharing capabilities.

I saw IPTV the other day, and I thought it was awesome. I took my first gander at AT&T U-verse (based on Microsoft’s IPTV technology) and I thought it was so awesome. The menu guide was so slick and quik. It was like I couldn’t believe how amazing it worked so well than other cable/satellite providers. It’s just so cool.

IPTV is TV of the future. Even if most people don’t realize it, Microsoft has something here.

I was going to write about this yesterday as well. I think it has a lot of promise, but we’ll see with the advancement of online apps, such as Joost really change the way IPTV will work.
