Google has acquired mobile productivity apps suite Quick Office, Google announced today. Quick Office is a mobile productivity that allows users to edit Office documents Word, Excel and PowerPoint on their mobile phones.
Quick Office makes native apps for mobile platforms, the acquisition may allow Google to develop native apps for its own Google Apps product. In a blog post Google says the Quick Office’s “powerful technology” will help its own productivity suite.
Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device. Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we’ll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite.
Quick Office makes apps for Android, iOS, and Symbian platforms. It offers free apps for users and also paid versions for enterprise customers. usually after acquisition Google will make the apps free, but we are not sure if this is the case with this company as well.
Microsoft is working to bring their Office apps to iPad and Android platforms, and it is supposed to release those apps by November. With the launch of Windows 8 OS and Windows 8 tablets Microsoft might tightly integrate Office and Windows 8 in their tablets to give incentive to users to buy Windows 8 tablets. With this acquisition Google might bring their native apps to the Android platform to counter the Windows 8 tablets.
