Aakash 2 tablet at same price, Datawind can bid

The low cost tablet Aakash will be released with new specifications as Aakash 2. There were rumors from the past few days that Datawind, the manufacturer of Aakash tablet is kicked out from the project. But it turns out that they were just rumors and Datawind can participate in the tender process for Aakash 2 for procuring 5 million Aakash tablets to be out in two months.

Datawind has to supply 100,000 tablets as per the existing contract and can participate in the Aakash 2 tender according to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal reports ET. Kapil Sibal reportedly showcased Aakash 2 before the media today.

Aakash 2 will come with 700MMHz processor and a capacitive touch screen. Specs are improved but the original price of the tablet remains unchanged at Rs. 2276, the same price at which Aakash 1 was sold.

This vindicates our point that Datawind continues to be a serious player in the supply of Aakash both for the present order of the Ministry of HRD and also future course”, said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind. “We never had any doubts about our position in the first place. With today’s announcement by the Ministry, the same has been cleared to all those who were speculating”
