Android 5.0 Jelly Bean to come this fall

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich released in November 2011 is not yet fully loaded to the devices, in fact at the moment there is only one phone, Google Nexus being sold with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich pre-installed. There are rumors two weeks back that Android 5.0 Jelly Bean will release this summer. Hiroshi Lockheimer, VP of Engineering for Mobile at Google hinted the possibility of Android 5.0 launch this fall in an interview to Computerworld

Android 5.0 name has not been announced officially, but each Android version before has been named after a pastry in alphabetical order starting with Cupcake (1.5), Donut (2.0), Éclair (2.1), Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), Honeycomb (3.0) and Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0). At MWC 2012 Google has placed a bowl of Jelly Beans in their booth, this is also leading to the speculation that Android 5.0 will be called Jelly Bean.

Android release schedule is usually one major release per year with some maintenance releases in between. If that has to be the case then Android 5.0 Jelly Bean should launch in November this year around the same time last year Ice Cream Sandwich launched. He also clarified that there is no time frame set for the Android 5.0 release. “The [timing of releases] is not what drives us, but what does is innovation and offering users a great experience.”

Lockheimer also said that the future version will give a polished experience to users which smoother and faster.

While there is not much information except rumors and expectations, even if Android 5.0 is released in the fall it will take at least few months before device makers and carriers push those updates to end users. That’s it for the Android 5.0 part and we are still waiting for the Android 4.0 updates for previous versions of Android.
