Facebook acquires Face.com

The rumors are floating around from quite some time about the acquisition of Face.com by Facebook, and now the official news came from Face.com announcing the acquisition by Facebook. Face.com is behind the facial recognition technology used by several third party applications.

Face.com is behind the KLIK application on iOS devices, it allows users to tag their friends before uploading to Facebook. Face.com technology recognizes faces in users photos and allows them to tag immediately.

The move makes sense for Facebook as it is concentrating on mobile for quite some time, for example with it’s acquisition of Instagram and the recently released Facebook Camera app. If the technology is included in the Facebook apps then makes it easy for users to post photos to Facebook by tagging them with in the Facebook mobile app.

Face.com technology is used by third party developers, Face.com on it’s blog post says that developer support will continue for now.

Now, lots of developers use Face.com technology to power various apps and make wonderful products.  We love you guys, and the plan is to continue to support our developer community.  If there are new developments you can expect to hear from us here, on the developer blog, and through our developer newsletter.

We can now safely assume that the facial recognition technology of face.com will be better integrated to Facebook mobile applications.
