Google+ Sign-In, App authentication system similar to Facebook Connect

Google has released Google+ Sign-In, an app authentication platform that allows users to login to third party web sites and applications using Google account credentials. Google+ Sign-In is similar to Facebook Connect and Twitter Login. According to Google the new sign-in platform provides a secure login system with spam free social stream for users.

The Google+ sing-in announced today allows developers to integrate Google+ login to their apps and websites so that users can login to them with Google account credentials. Google is announcing a few partners who have already included Google+ sing-in to their apps including, Banjo, Beautylish, Fancy, Fitbit, Flixster, Shazam and others.

If you use Gmail you can use that Google account to login to any supporting site using Google+ authentication system. For example Flixster added this authentication, if you visit Flixster it will ask you login with either Facebook or Google+.

You can always go and check your app authentications at plus.google.com/apps url. If you see any suspicious activity you can remove them, or an app you are no longer using can be removed from the authenticated list.

Google+ Sign-In is a part of Google Play services, which allows developers to integrate Google products into their Android apps. Today Google Play services 3.0 is released along with Google+ sign-in and Google Maps Android API improvements.

In this initial release Google is focused on these points:

  • Simplicity and Security: Google+ sign-in comes with the Google 2 step verification, the one used for Gmail login. If you have a Google account you can login with that to any app supporting the authentication and yu can decide what information you share.
  • Desktop and Mobile: Users checking into sites with this sign-in now have the option to install the corresponding Android app on their connected devices instantly.
  • No Social Spam: You decide what app activity you share with others. Google+ don’t let apps inject pointless notofications into users stream (read Facebook Friends stream).
  • Sharing and Interactive posts: Sharing is not just for viewing Google thinks, it allows your friends interact with the post content like buying music, or reviewing app like that.

Google+ Sign-In is going to compete with established login platforms, Facebook Connect and Twitter Login, as advertised if we control what to share and what not then its great.
