Identi.ca: Open Source Microblogging Platform

Published on July 2, 2008   By Ram  2 Comments

Identi.ca is an open source implementation of a distributed microblogging platform. There are enough twitter clones but this one is different from others. One of the striking features of this app is that you will have full control of your data, meaning if you want to migrate to another service you can take it with you, that is what the faq says.

The functionality is similar to twitter alike sites, it allows you to post 140 characters messages. Another awesome feature you don’t need to create yet another account, login with your OpenID and specify a username and you are good to go. the URL is twitter like ex: http://identi.ca/vrreddy, to see all your messages, replies etc add all to it http://ident.ca/vrreddy/all/, for RSS add /rss at the end of the URL.

Identi.ca runs on Laconica software available as Open Source. The list of upcoming features is interesting. Some of them are SMS updates and notifications, Twitter-compatible API, more streamlined interface, Maps, Cross post to twitter, pownce, Jaiku etc. This looks like a promising app to look out.
