Google confirms the new Camera API with RAW image and Burst mode support

Earlier this month news surfaced that raw image format and burst mode are coming to Android devices with a new Android Camera API under development. Google has now confirmed the functionality, the support for RAW and burst mode is present in the Android’s hardware abstraction layer (HAL). Google will release the developer API in the upcoming release of Android.

Developers will be able to use the Camera API to improve their Camera apps. That means the improvements are not limited to Google Nexus devices and they will be available to wide range of Android devices. Google’s Nexus 5 has been criticized for its performance earlier and the new camera API is going to fix that. Nexus 5 already uses the burst mode in HDR+ mode, where it captures multiple shots and merge them to generate a single HDR image.

Google ha not given a timeline for the release but now we know that these updates are coming our way. With the raw format photography enthusiasts will be able to post process the images with their own apps and programs.
