MediaTek to launch 6-8 tablet Processors in 2014

MediaTek will launch 6-8 processors for the tablet segment according to a report on Digitimes. MediaTek has released four processors in 2013, according to industry sources the number will double in 2014 as MediaTek would like to expand the market. The new CPUs will target entire tablet range, Octa Core processors for targeting the high-end tablets, Qua Core processors for targeting the mid range and Dual Core processors for targeting the low end of the spectrum.

The 8-core processors are being developed for large high-end tablet which could compete with the Notebook models. The Quad Core and Dual Core models come with incorporated wireless chips to target the low end tablets and large sized smartphones according to the report. MediaTek has release MT6592 Octa Core processor this month, smartphones running this processor are expected in early 2014.

MediaTek wants to double its tablet shipments in 2014 with the new chips as well as the ones released in 2013. MediaTek is expected to ship over 20 million CPUs in the year. Android tablets in general are expected to grow in 2014 to 180-200 million compared to 130 million in 2013.
